Markings:

The canvas is unlined, and the paint surface is dirty with a very yellowed varnish. There is 1.5 cm.-wide band of discoloured retouching along all four margins. There are also visible stretcher marks, with some associated discoloured retouching, notably upper centre and upper left. There is a paint loss (0.5 x 0.5 cm.) in the tip of his index finger, another in the centre of his back, and a handful of pinprick losses, notably in his red collar, lower left, and another in the top left of his cap. There are smaller discoloured retouchings visible scattered throughout. Inspection under utlraviolet light reveals the old, thick and streaky varnish, underneath which the aforementioned retouchings are visible. In fact, inspection under ultraviolet light does not reveals anything more than what is already visible to the naked eye. In overall fair condition.
